I love to bake. There is something almost therapeutic about throwing together a bunch of raw ingredients and watching chemistry and a little heat turn them into something completely different. The best part is that when you are done you can give your delicious creations to those you love.
I also love my cattle dog mix Bronte (as in the Bronte sisters). So of course I bake for her. Her favorite thing in the world besides zoomies and tug is peanut butter so peanut butter dog biscuits seemed like a natural choice to make for her. The only question was, which recipe should I use? The internet is full of simple peanut butter dog biscuit recipes that are easy to make, but which one would Bronte love the most?
I decided to find out.

I chose three recipes from the top of a quick google search and set to work.
Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Treats from the Cookie Rookie which called for flour, eggs, peanut butter, water, and honey. I made it without the frosting to make the comparison to the other recipes fair.
Homemade Peanut butter Cookie Dog Treats from Miss Molly Says made of Flour, oats, peanut butter, and hot water.
Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits from Food.com, comprised of flour, oats, baking powder, milk, peanut butter, and molasses.
It took me about two hours to bake all three recipes. Bronte was watching me from my partner's office space (she's not allowed in the kitchen) the whole time, salivating at the scent of peanut butter. I made half batches but still ended up with well over 60 dog biscuits. When they had all finished cooling, I laid them out in a line starting with recipe #2, then recipe #1, then recipe #3.
Bronte went to recipe #1 first, then #2, then #3. I jotted down the information then laid out the next three dog biscuits in a different order; #1, #3, #2. Bronte went for #3 first, then #1, then #2. My partner and I laid the biscuits out in one last order; #2, #1, #3. Bronte beelined for #1, then went for #2, then #3. It was clear by now that the dog biscuit recipe was not influencing the order she went for them in at all. She was gobbling them down in the exact same pattern; middle, left, right.
So we switched gears. I put a biscuit in each of my fists and let Bronte choose which one she got to eat. At first, she showed a preference for whichever biscuit was in my right hand and I was worried she wasn't going to let us know which biscuit was her favorite, but after we tried a few combinations, I noticed that she was choosing #2 the least often and #1 the most. This made sense because recipe #1 had the most peanut butter in it. Bronte was really enjoying the whole experiment, By now she had eaten over a dozen biscuits and there definitely wasn't a single one she didn't like.
My partner and I decided to try each biscuit ourselves (all three recipes are safe for human consumption) to confirm Bronte's findings. Recipe #1 was very much like a less sweet peanut butter cookie, recipe #2 tasted like an oatmeal cookie without raisins or cinnamon, and recipe #3 tasted like a much blander gingerbread cookie. We agreed with Bronte that while none of them had quite enough flavor for a human treat, #1 had the most flavor. So in the end it was unanimous. The Cookie Rookie's Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Treats were the winner.
The best part of the whole experiment is that now that our fridge is full of dozens of treats Bronte loves she's been listening to directions just a little more than usual in the hope that I might pull one out for her.
