My Australian Cattle Dog mix Bronte seems to have an endless supply of energy. She would zoomie all day if I let her. Luckily there is a community yard she can run in at the townhouse I rent, but sometimes she needs somewhere new to explore and get her energy out. Here are some of the places I take her around San Diego. If you live in the area and your dog is high energy but also just a little shy, they might work for you as well.

South Park Dog Park
This dog park is located in South Park. It's spacious with lots of room for Bronte to run and play. That's important because she can be shy with other dogs at first. South Park Dog Park has a beautiful view and plenty of room for her even when it's crowded. It has lots of trees and benches to sit at and even has its own little free library for us dog mamas who love to read. There's an agility course you can use to get your dog's energy out and work on communication training at the same time. It's a fun and beautiful place to take your dog, but what it doesn't have is a fence. Only take your dog here if they have great recall and aren't in any danger of running away if you let them off their leash to play.
Ocean Beach Dog Beach
Dogs love to run and play in the sand, but unfortunately most beaches don't allow dogs off the pavement, let alone off their leashes. The Ocean Beach Dog Beach does. Whether your dog likes to play fetch in the water, frolic with other dogs, or sniff around in the tide pools they will have a wonderful time here. Bronte usually does zoomies while I walk along the shoreline, but sometimes she will run and play with the other dogs. Once she even caught a fish! We have to be careful not to say the word "beach" around her or she'll run to the door in excitement. Parking can be difficult at OB Dog Beach and like South Park Dog Park there is no fence, but if your dog has good recall and you don't mind making a few laps around the parking lot, it's a great place to let your dog play and get their energy out.
Communal Coffee
Many cafes and coffee shops allow dogs on the patio, but if your dog is high energy and anxious it can be difficult to leave them alone while you go inside to order. Fortunately, Communal Coffee is not only located conveniently close to the South Park dog park so I can tire Bronte out before stopping by for a mocha and salmon bagel, but the kitchen is inside an adorable coffee cart so I can keep her with me as I step up to order. The super friendly staff has even given Bronte a treat now and again so she has something to munch on too as I sip my coffee.
So those are some of Bronte's favorite haunts around San Diego. If you live nearby or are coming through for a visit and your dog is high energy and just a little anxious, definitely check them out. I think your pup might enjoy them as much as me and Bronte do.
